Ways to Give
Donate Stock
Giving appreciated stock and securities is one of the most tax-efficient ways to support Hillsdale students.
This information is general in nature and not tax or legal advice. Please consult your tax advisor or financial planner to understand how a gift of securities applies to your specific situation.
When you donate securities you’ve held for more than a year, you can generally claim a charitable deduction for their full market value, and avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation, subject to IRS limits. That means more of your gift’s value reaches Hillsdale students, and less goes to taxes.
Three Steps
How it Works
1
Notify us before you transfer.
Stock transfers arrive without your name attached, so we won’t know it’s from you unless you tell us first. Email us at execdirector@hillsdalehsfoundation.org with the information below.
2
Contact your broker or financial advisor.
Let them know you’d like to transfer securities as a charitable gift, and give them our transfer information below.
3
We’ll confirm receipt and send your tax documentation.
Under IRS rules, your gift date is the date the shares arrive in our account, not the date you initiate the transfer, so please plan ahead if you’re giving before a deadline.
